Ati Rudra Maha Yajna is a widely acclaimed form of worship of Lord Shiva, the destroyer of evil and the bestower of peace, through fire sacrifice invoking His blessings on the entire creation for its well-being. It is an occasion for fixation of the mind on appropriate mantras defined as formulae for the purpose, recited with correct intonation so that the power thus generated and released can save mankind everywhere.

Traditionally, the worship is done through the ritual of Abhisheka (ceremonial bath) of the Linga, the beginningless and endless form of the Formless is symbolic of purifying of our own Atma Linga.

Ati Rudram which occurs in the Yajur Veda involves 14641 Rudrams, each Rudram being a combination of a Namakam thai dwells on the aspect of detachment (virakti) and a Chamakam that stresses on the aspect of desire, i.e., what is to be discarded and what is to be desired for. Along with the Rudrabhishekas Rudrahomas are also conducted in eleven specially erected Homa Kundas (pits of sacred fire) by 132 Ritwiks (priests) well versed in Vedas.

The sole aim of this Yajna is Loka Kalyana i.e., Universal Peace and Prosperity. The Yajna acquired special importance in Prasanthi Nilayam as if was performed in the Divine presence of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the very embodiment of the Shiva-Shakti form of the Almighty.
